Re DI’s and amps and setch

In answer to a question, I posted at talkbass:
Thing is, if you are recording the bass straight into the interface, and the latter is transparent, then you theoretically get the sound of the bass, only.
Don’t know about all y’all, but I don’t play that sound.
I play the bass plus the pedals plus the amp.  And if I’m real lucky or sometimes not, the sound of the room.
When I record I usually (not always) want the sound of what I play.
Now, sometimes, a amp is impractical, and that’s when a good D.I. can be a great substitute.
Bottom line for me: just the sound of my bass is not what I want.

The Who

The new one is really, really good, despite the banjo on one tune.

Pino is on 8/11, Starkey on most of the drums with 2 by Waronker, 1 each by Chamberlin and Azar, Tench onna few …

Prodooshed by Sardy and Townshend.

4/5 olives.

Between rock and politics

As told to a fellow lib:

Short story:
A cuppla week a ago I had a drummer over. As he was setting up he disclosed he was trumpy. We agreed to no further discussion, played, recorded, and his next day feedback was good, etc.
Today he bows out and the only reason I can figger is politics.
We (me and Tom, who has played guitar with me for years) had the same situation with a great guitarist we did a album with, worked with for about 4 months, drank and joked with, became great friends.
One day politics came up.
He ghosted us there after from the very next day – never heard from him again, no reply to phone or email …
I have a guitarist tomorrow whom I raised the issue with, anuvver trumpy, we agreed to set it aside – we’ll see if it works.
I’m at the point of making that question a litmus test.

The Cure 25

A while back a bud spoke up for The Stones, Havana Moon as one of the best music DVD’s.

Lemme add a suggestion of The Cure, 25th Anniv.

Great videography, sound, Smith (nobody does a finer resurrected Marge Thatcher) is in fine form, and when they let Reeves Gabrels go look out!

“Technology changing art changing technology”

I keep wanting to blog about that idear, from cheap Chinese guitars to clip-on tuners to downloadable tabs to Class D amps to Neo speakers – alla this stuff is more or less currently changing the art form(s) in mebbe not immediately recognized/acknowledged ways – just like DAW’s and digital and I-Pods and streaming did, it’s ongoing, but mebbe not quite as obvious.
