re Layne Staley

I posted this at LO:

Yeah, they were huge o’er here during the grunge thing; they started out as metal and “Man in a Box” was one of the last MTV hits.

Their best song might be “Rooster”, writ and co-sung by the guitarist, Jerry Cantrell.

AIC still goes on with a new lead singer, still releases records, and still tours to big crowds.

Staley was a friend of Mark Lanegan who tells stories of him, including his death, in his book, Sing Backwards and Weep.

IMO, the Unplugged record is their definitive album, followed by Dirt.

In some ways, they are America’s Radiohead.

The song-writing, the arrangements, the sequencing, Tweedy’s voice, the performances in general and (for me) Nels Cline’s in particular are noteworthy, and they are far more expansive than another, somewhat similar (without the alt-country part, of course) fave, The National.

Yeah, I know, parsnips, apples, oranges …
