almost had my first panic attack

Buddy comes over to pick me up in his 2023 Dodge challenger to go drinking.

I scrunch into the back seat, lasted about 30 sec’s.

To even get in the front seat I hadda enter the vehicle head first (I’m 6′).

Sat down, the roof is right at the top of my head, dash about 16″ in front of my chest and about 6″ above my legs.

NFW.

Pretty car but …

Looks like this except his has yellow detail instead of red:

current drum mic approach

Senn E602 on kick, right on the head hole
SM57 or old AKG sintered on snare 45-ish degree angle with mic right at edge and 3″ up
Studio Projects C4’s on OH/FOH, 90 degree crisscross, 5.5′ up and 6′ out, even-plained

I have, of course, other options, but I kinda stumbled on this setup for my living room and the drummer and I like it

I usually gate nothing on the drums altho’ I’ll adjust the bleed in quite sections in various ways which might include gating there

I was hard-limiting all about 4-6dB and still do.
I was compressing the kick and snare quite a bit but last time I did not but did compress the OH’s quite a bit

my key adjustment is to keep even levels, because we are happy with the sounds

90% of the time I put a plate on the snare, not too heavy

I don’t even change the mics for snareless tom-heavy tracks, may adjust the panning

and my vocal mic to the side of the kit is a Beyer Soundstar MKII or Beta 58 and sometimes that makes an appearance, smashed, as a kinda room mic, centered in the mix the whole time, or sometimes just on the chorus or bridge, etc.

some eclectic record reviews

shelleydevoto: techno from the main Buzzcocks – really good and surprisingly current-sounding

Eurythmics 1st: has anyone ever had a better voice? not everuy song is great, but many are – a nostalgic classic

New Order live at Bestival2012: no Hooky, and that’s aiight, great selection of their tunes and some JD stuff – I been digging a cuppla Hooky’s live records and love ’em – he sounds more like Ian, but Sumner has a better voice

Zappa, Live at Roxy, You Are what You Is: hilarious stoned classics, and Vai and Zappa just wail on the latter

Prince, Welcome to America: said to be the best of the vault records, it’s really good latter-day Prince

Rival Sons, latest: not my cuppa

Dead Sara, any: lovin’ this band for the lyrics and the vocals
