Senn E602 on kick, right on the head hole
SM57 or old AKG sintered on snare 45-ish degree angle with mic right at edge and 3″ up
Studio Projects C4’s on OH/FOH, 90 degree crisscross, 5.5′ up and 6′ out, even-plained
I have, of course, other options, but I kinda stumbled on this setup for my living room and the drummer and I like it
I usually gate nothing on the drums altho’ I’ll adjust the bleed in quite sections in various ways which might include gating there
I was hard-limiting all about 4-6dB and still do.
I was compressing the kick and snare quite a bit but last time I did not but did compress the OH’s quite a bit
my key adjustment is to keep even levels, because we are happy with the sounds
90% of the time I put a plate on the snare, not too heavy
I don’t even change the mics for snareless tom-heavy tracks, may adjust the panning
and my vocal mic to the side of the kit is a Beyer Soundstar MKII or Beta 58 and sometimes that makes an appearance, smashed, as a kinda room mic, centered in the mix the whole time, or sometimes just on the chorus or bridge, etc.
