These were actually highly influenced by the gear used.
First, the 5-string bass, no effects – all that bottom is from it (Tobias Toby, made by Epiphone);
Second, an Orange pedal, The Getaway Driver – which has a cabinet emulator, and is most of the rhythm guitars here, run thru a Brick tube DI and a 160XT compressor;
Third, a custom distortion pedal I just bought – The Sax o’ Fuzz – what is a clone of a boutique pedal called the Zippy Fuzz; this one has a blend added and the idear is to sound horn-like. I don’t think it necessarily does (would help if I played horn-lines) and I don’t even think it sounds unique as recorded, but it feels different, almost out of control, as I play it thru the Bassbreaker 007, which is inspiring;
Finally, the guitar is a Dean semi-hollow (thicker and heavier than a thinline). It is a great rhythm guitar player (I used the six, pictured below), and the neck is comfy for that, but it is not a great lead guitar as the neck is not fast – I gotta fight it, and I like that.
FWIW, my understanding is that there are some 3 large factories in China, much like Korea and Japan, which contract to build to spec, and/or build a model that retailers slap their name on.
Pedals and other electronics are a similar situation, altho’ I did read somewhere that Joyo either builds their own or owns the builder …
Silvie and I both have a variation of a United Audio 710 Twinfinity hybrid pre (his is quad, I think; mine single). There is a Chinese-labeled Alctron that looks exactly the same, cops the design, but is said to use inferior components; check it out:
